Our dentist will make a recommendation as to which type of dental filling should work best for you, usually based on the size and location of the cavity. Each of these dental filling materials has its own benefits. Tooth-colored resin fillings are extremely popular because they are cured to match your teeth. This means that they cannot be seen once they are fully applied. These fillings are extremely useful when fixing cavities on teeth that show when you speak or smile. In addition, these fillings call for less removal structure of tooth enamel, so more of your tooth will remain intact. Additionally, this type of filling will actually strengthen your tooth since the material is bonded to the tooth. However, if you have a larger filling on a back tooth, our dentist may recommend that you get an amalgam restoration. These fillings are silver-colored, so we usually try to limit their use to back teeth. However, amalgam fillings also have their benefits. They are extremely strong, and are best at withstanding the vigorous chewing forces that are found on back teeth. But, these fillings are applied in a different manner, and usually call for a larger amount of tooth enamel to be removed, then if the tooth is filled with a tooth-colored filling.
